In this interview we have Karrueche Tran being interviewed by Big Boy. Karrueche is Chris Brown's ex girlfriend and this interview will be about her recent split with Chris because of infidelity and the child he had that she didn't know about.

Introduction
  • Big boy starts off with an introduction, he starts off by saying 'Alright, now, we got Karrueche Tran up in here.' this is to her introduce her to the audience.
Development
  • He then asks her if she's going to go by Karrueche or Karrueche Tran this is to ease her into the interview and to set the atmosphere. He then goes on to ask about her acting career and what's going on with that and she answers with a lot of detail. he asks her about her career because its something she can speak on her career because she knows a lot about it and she's comfortable answering questions about that.
Confidence Building
  • Later on in the interview he asks her about her love life and she said she's single, he compliments her on her appearance saying she's a very beautiful girl so she must get a lot of guys asking her out this ultimately makes her feel good about herself and makes her more confident, if Big Boy was to ask the key questions here instead the confidence building questions, he wouldn't get the same response. Karrueche wouldn't be as confident and wouldn't give such detailed answers.
Key Questions
  • He goes on to ask if she's had any contact with Chris so then audience know that its about to get interesting and we didn't just watch the interview to Karrueche have a good time. Big Boy says 'Have you had any contact with Chris?' and she replies with 'No'. They started talking about the rumours about her sending a girl to break into his house. and he then goes on to ask how she found out about Chris' baby. Big Boy is asking these specific questions because that's what everyone wants to know, we also wants to know how she's going to respond to them and what she has to say.
SoundBites
  • Soundbites in this interview would be the questions like 'do you have a problem with Rihanna', any of the questions about Chris and his baby, Karrueche interviewing Big Boy and any general conversation they had. Because we want to be enticed to tune in and listening.
Wind Up
  • To end the interview Big Boy thanks Karrueche for letting them interview her and he says 'Come back to tomorrow'. he ends it on a positive note because he wants to be able to interview her again some time.

Interview Styles

Interview Styles

The style of the interview is the style of which the interviewer will approach the interview, interview styles depend on who your interviewing and why your are interviewing them. there are 6 different styles of interview each serve a different purpose.

The styles are:
  • Hard news
News that affects our daily lives, eg politics, government, and economics.
  • Human interest
A.K.A. soft news. news we are interested in but are not affected by, eg the royal baby being born.
  • Entertainment
No actual reason for the interview just a light hearted, fun interview.
  • Investigative
Trying to get to the bottom of a hard hitting topic eg documentaries
  • Promotions
Interviewing someone for promotional purposes only these are often celebrities with new product or a new album
  • Combative
This is quite an aggressive style of interviewing, mainly used for politicians.

In this interview Kanye is talking to Ellen about his family and how he proposed to Kim Kardashian, this style of interview is human interest, this isn't a serious like changing topic, its pop culture so its something we are interested in and want to know about, its also a mix of entertainment because its light hearted, a lot of people would like to know about more about his relationship, his new family, and any new music that he might be working, its also entertaining to watch.

Body language

Body language
Body language is important in an interview, it determines the atmosphere of interview. There are different types of body language, open body language and closed body language.
Open body is what we should be trying to achieve in an interview, this would include sitting in a position facing each other, mirroring and eye contact is a good way of showing that your interested in what they're saying. Closed body language is the opposite, they will look uninterested have they're arms folded and wont make as much eye contact.

Open
Open body language is a must, you do this by mirroring and engaging with the interviewee, using eye contact and looking interested and curious in what they are talking about this will make the interviewee comfortable to talk and they will open up more and tell you more about themselves. Nodding is a good way of showing interest.

Strengths

  • The interviewee feels a lot more comfortable to talk to you , they will open more and this will encourage more detailed answer
Weaknesses

  • The interview might get too comfortable and start going off topic and talking about something else

In this interview we see Tyra interviewing Beyoncé and Tyra demonstrating open body language, she's making eye contact and she facing Beyoncé, Tyra is nodding and showing interest in what Beyoncé is saying.  Tyra is also making conversation with Beyoncé talking about how much she loves cheese, also about her mothers grey hair and how Beyoncé wants the same style when she gets older. this type of conversing makes the interviewee feel very comfortable and makes it easier to get an honest answer.

Closed
Closed body language isn't good, when the interviewee has closed body language it can cause the atmosphere of the interview to plummet. The  interviewee may become uninterested in the interview and give blunt answers, closed body language are things like folded arms, not making eye contact, and not engaging with interviewee, if the interviewer is the one showing bad body language then this may cause the interviewee to feel uncomfortable and disrespected.

Strengths
  • The interviewee will pay more attention and it may cause them to answer the questions correctly.
Weaknesses
  • It may cause the interviewee to feel uncomfortable and you may come off as arrogant and rude. this will lead to less detailed answers and unsuccessful interview.

In this interview the model /singer Grace Jones feels left out by the interviewer Russell Harty. When he turns his back to her he showed closed body language, he make eye contact with her and he shut her out of the conversation which understandably Grace doesn't like. She didn't feel that she was getting enough attention from the interviewer. What Russell should have done is have the two guest sit next to each other  and he interview them both, because turning your back 0n someone is quite rude and it doesn't build good rapport. also because he ahs turned his back to her when he wants to ask her some questions she's going to be reluctant to answer because she won feel comfortable.

Building Rapport
Building rapport is really good for an interview, if you do this it means the interview will go well, building basically means establishing a connection with each other, not being rude or belligerent but nice, friendly and approachable. To continue the good rapport you have to show signs of open body language (making eye contact and facing each other) not closed (folded arms, looking uninterested), and demonstrating active listening (nodding and responding to what they are saying.)

Open and Closed Questions

Open and closed questions
Open and closed questions are two different types of question you can ask someone during an interview.
Open questions require a detailed answer whereas closed questions require a yes or no answer.

Closed questions

An example of a closed question would be 'do you like exercise?' Where the interviewee would answer with either a "yes" or a "no".
Closed questions are usually used in vox-pops, questionnaires and 1-1 interviews. They restrict the interviewee's answer. Closed questions are also good for finding out data which can then be turned into a bar chart or statistics of some sort.

Strength of closed questions

  • It is easier and quicker to respond to
The interviewee isn't having to think of what to say because the answer required is a one word answer or a short phrase.
  • Answers are easier to statistically analyse
Meaning closed questions are good for finding out data in contrast to open questions.
  • Respondents are more likely to answer about sensitive topics
Using closed questions ease a person into feeling comfortable, therefore there more like to feel relaxed and open up to the interviewer.

Weakness of closed questions
  • It's too short
It doesn't enable the interviewer to gather any sort of information

Open questions

An example of an open question would be "what do you like about exercise?" Questions like these help the interviewer get more information.
Open questions are usually used in vox-pops, 1-1 interviews and focus groups. They require a lot more detail than closed questions, they pressure the interviewee to elaborate on their answer.

Strengths of opened questions

  • They permit an unlimited number of possible answers

Because the questions are open the interviewee can answer with anything they want to

  • The interviewee can answer in detail and can clarify themselves
Open questions give them the opportunity to explain themselves so their answer is unambiguous.
  • The interviewee can express themselves
They won't be pressured into saying what they don't want to, they can feel comfortable and be able to speak their mind without feeling judge or criticized.

Weaknesses of opened questions
  • Comparisons and statistical analysis become difficult
There is a lot more information to process and its not always easy to make sense of what the interviewee is saying as there may be unnecessary information.
  • The interviewee can give too much detail
The interviewee can say a lot about a certain topic that may cause the interview to longer than it should be.

This is an interview Cara Delevingne on the Lorraine show. The interviewer is asking a range of questions about her success, He asks her 'do you have any names for your characters?' she replies with 'no' this was a closed question she so replied with a blunt answer. The interviewer goes on to talk about her new movie , and the controversial themes expressed in the movie. He says 'The movies not controversial but it obviously a controversial subject, in many respects, was that something you paid a lot of thought to?' this is an open question, its allowing her to elaborate on what's she is saying and really go in depth.
